Which Excavator Fits Through a Fence Gate? Pair It With a Canycom Buggy
A backyard project can get complicated before the first bucket of dirt comes out of the ground. You need to get an excavator through the fence gate—and then figure out how to move everything you dig up.
At RINO Rents, we help you plan both parts of the job. A compact excavator paired with a Canycom tracked buggy can be a practical combination for digging in tight spaces and moving material between the backyard and your staging area.
Start With a Tape Measure
Measure the actual clear opening with the gate fully open. A gate sold as “36 inches” may have less usable room because of hinges, latches, posts, or the gate itself.
Check the entire route, too: the space between the house and fence, tight corners, steps, slopes, overhead branches, and the room available to turn and work.
Send us your measurements and a few photos before reserving. We can help match the equipment to your access and your project.
For Narrow Gates, Consider the CASE CX15EV
The CASE CX15EV electric mini excavator—often called the E15—is a strong starting point for projects with narrow access. Its retractable tracks bring the machine width down to approximately 31 inches, compared with approximately 41 inches when expanded.
That makes it a candidate for a true 36-inch clear opening, subject to checking the complete machine configuration, attachment, and route. The dozer blade extensions also need to be in the proper position for narrow access, this is easy to do by removing the pins and folding the blade wings back into the storage position.
This size can be useful for backyard drainage, landscape excavation, and smaller digging projects where access limits your options. We will also check the required digging depth, soil conditions, and charging plan before recommending it.
Once through the opening, follow the operator instructions for expanding the undercarriage before working. Getting through the gate and having enough space to operate are two separate requirements.
For Wider Openings, Match the Excavator to the Work
If you have a double gate or wider access, a larger excavator may be the better choice for deeper digging or moving more soil.
Do not choose by tonnage alone. Confirm the actual width of the machine, dozer blade, and attachment, then allow room for safe passage and operation. Tell us what you are digging, how deep you need to go, and how much material needs to come out.
Add a Canycom Buggy to Keep Material Moving
Getting the excavator into the backyard solves the access problem. A Canycom tracked buggy helps solve the hauling problem.
The excavator can load loose material into the buggy. The buggy then carries it to a suitable dump or staging area, reducing repeated wheelbarrow trips and the need to reposition the excavator for every load. It can also bring gravel, topsoil, or other suitable materials back into the work area.
Canycom publishes a width of approximately 35 inches for its SC75 buggy lineup. That is wider than the CASE excavator with its tracks retracted, so check that both machines fit. A true 36-inch opening leaves very little clearance for the buggy.
Payload ratings vary by model and generation. We will confirm the capacity of the specific rental unit; dense soil, stone, or concrete can reach its weight limit before the tub looks full.
Rubber tracks do not guarantee a damage-free lawn. Ground conditions, loaded weight, turns, and repeated trips all matter. Ask us about ground protection when planning your route.
Plan the Digging and Hauling Together
For a backyard patio, for example, the excavator can remove soil while the buggy transports it to an accessible staging area. The buggy can then carry base material back toward the patio.
With two trained operators and a safe loading area, digging and hauling can overlap. With one operator, you can alternate between the machines and still reduce manual hauling. Agree on loading signals, keep people clear of the excavator’s swing area, and follow each machine’s operating limits.
Before digging, arrange utility locating and identify private lines such as irrigation or power to an outbuilding.
